Loaded Miles vs All-Miles CPM Calculator

Two jobs can advertise the same CPM and produce different pay because one requires more empty miles. This calculator keeps the paid-mile number but converts it to the all-mile rate that better reflects the route.

How to use this calculator

Start by choosing a single time period and definition for every input. Replace the sample values with figures from your own records. Confirm whether a field means paid miles, all miles, gross revenue, taxable cash, reimbursement, deduction, or business cost before entering it. The tool recalculates locally as a planning aid.

Use it to compare dedicated, regional, and OTR offers with different deadhead patterns. Save more than one scenario when uncertainty matters: a conservative case, an expected case, and a strong case. Keep units and periods consistent, and write down where each assumption came from so the comparison can be repeated.

Formula and calculation sequence

Gross pay equals paid miles times paid-mile CPM plus extras. Effective all-mile CPM divides gross by paid plus unpaid miles. CPM dilution is the difference between gross per paid mile and gross per all mile.

The result set includes Weekly gross, Gross per paid mile, Gross per all mile, CPM dilution, Unpaid-mile share, Gross per working hour. Intermediate outputs are shown when they help detect a missing cost or a mismatched unit. Zero-value and zero-denominator cases return a warning instead of displaying infinity or presenting an unsupported decision.

Worked planning example

At 70 cents over 2,400 paid miles plus 200 unpaid miles, the route earns the advertised rate on paid miles but a lower rate across all movement.

The default is only a demonstration of the interface. It is not a current market average, recommended rate, quote, tax position, carrier promise, lender term, or expected outcome. Change every default before relying on the estimate for comparison.

What this result includes—and what it does not

The tool includes only the visible fields and applies the formula described above. It cannot discover missing deductions, fuel purchases, empty miles, downtime, maintenance, contract chargebacks, tax facts, permits, exchange rates, or other items that were not entered. A mathematically correct result can still be incomplete when the source records are incomplete.

Use the estimate as a checkpoint. Compare it with the controlling contract, settlement, return, payroll system, loan disclosure, or official filing portal. Investigate a difference instead of altering inputs merely to force agreement.

  • Treat the result as a planning estimate, not a payroll statement, tax return, rate confirmation, settlement, financing offer, or guarantee.
  • Use contract terms, pay statements, fuel receipts, ELD records, lender disclosures, and current official guidance when they differ from an example.
  • Do not use an estimate to exceed equipment ratings, hours-of-service limits, insurance requirements, or any legal or safety obligation.

Verification checklist

  • Confirm that miles, gallons, hours, revenue, and costs cover the same period.
  • Check units, decimal placement, and whether percentages were entered as percentages.
  • Separate reimbursement, deduction, expense, tax reserve, revenue, and profit.
  • Recalculate when a rate, route, contract, quarter, or source document changes.
  • Retain the source documents needed for the actual business, payroll, tax, or compliance process.

Frequently asked questions

Is this result guaranteed?

No. Loaded Miles vs All-Miles CPM Calculator produces a planning estimate from the values entered. Actual outcomes can change with documents, policy, timing, tax treatment, downtime, missing costs, and rules.

Where should the inputs come from?

Use pay statements, contracts, rate confirmations, fuel receipts, ELD or trip records, lender disclosures, accounting records, and current official sources. Replace every example default.

Does Driver Pay Calc save my values?

Calculation happens in the browser. A scenario is stored only when you choose Save on this device. Shared links contain values in the URL hash, and local downloads contain the estimate you create.

Can I use the estimate for a filing or settlement?

Use it to prepare and reconcile, not as the controlling document. A filed return, payroll statement, signed contract, carrier settlement, lender disclosure, or official system controls.

How should I compare two scenarios?

Keep definitions and periods consistent. Change one assumption at a time, save each scenario locally, and compare the decision metric described on this page rather than only the headline rate.
